The Curious Case of Wholesome TV

We've gotta talk about Abbott Elementary and Ted Lasso...

But first I have to point out that with age my sense of humour has grown darker and more absurdist in nature. Much like the artists who were horrified by the absurdity of world war 1 and created Dadaism as a way to critique the establishment or core-core content creators on TikTok who comment on imperialism or climate change or the pervasive nature of capitalism or most often all of them all at once.

My sense of humour has been moulded by the existential dread of living in uncertainty. This is why I'm so surprised at how much I enjoy these shows. I shy away from shows that feel like they'll have a moral of the story because I don't live in a world where the tortoise triumphs over the hare.

I live in a world that's bursting at the seams in corruption and filth which possibly explains the rise in post-apocalyptic blockbusters I saw in my adolescence. Every art movement has its antidote and the antidote to trepidation is hope. Dealing in stories of hope and silver linings carries as much artistic integrity as dealing in stories of dismay and folly.
